Woman shot dead near Gaza barrier by Israelis

The Israeli military have shot dead a Palestinian woman who locals say was mentally ill, near the Gaza-Israel security barrier. The area near the border is declared a no-go zone by Israel.

The incident happened near the southern city of Khan Younis, late on Friday.

Israel says it maintains the buffer zone to prevent attacks by militants. There have been numerous shootings of Palestinians who breach the area in spite of warnings.

The Israeli military said the woman was part of a group that ignored orders to leave the area, at which point they fired at the legs of the group, hitting one. Gaza authorities and the woman’s neighbours said Amna Qdaih suffered from mental illness and they did not know why she was near the fence.

Ms Qdaih’s body was found and transferred to a hospital early on Saturday. Local authorities claimed she was hit by several bullets.

Israel police shoot and kill US murderer while in prison

Israeli special forces have shot dead an American-Israeli prisoner, who was jailed for a brutal murder in the US, after he opened fire on prison guards.

A police spokesman said Samuel Sheinbein had shot three security officers, critically injuring one, and barricaded himself the compound. Sheinbein was serving a 24-year sentence for a 1997 murder in Maryland.

He fled to Israel shortly after the killing, in a case that briefly soured US-Israeli relations. It led to a change in Israel’s extradition laws.

The shoot-out happened at Rimonim prison north of Tel Aviv. Israel media reports said _73174001_021283352-1Sheinbein holed himself up in a room and fired at prison guards and special forces officers, who returned fire, shooting him dead.

It is not clear how Sheinbein got hold of the weapon.

The embassy of Iran in the city of Beirut, capital of Lebanon, has been blasted with two bombs. At least 22 are reported dead and 140 injured.

A jihadist gropu related to al-Qaeda took responsability for the act. The head of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades described it as a “double martyrdom operation carried out by two heroes from the heroic Sunnis of Lebanon”.

The reports say one of the bombs was carried by a suicide bomber and the other in a car bomb.

The iranian ambassador blamed Israel for the attack, allegations that Israel denied.

Israeli soldier stabbed to death by a teenager

An Israeli soldier has been stabbed to death by a Palestinian teenager on a bus in northern Israel.

The 18-year-old soldier was stabbed multiple times in the neck and upper body as the bus from Nazareth stopped in the town of Afula, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but died of his wounds.

The attacker, a 16-year-old from the West Bank town of Jenin who was working in Israel illegally, is in custody.

Other passengers on the bus subdued him before handing him over to the security forces, according to the Jerusalem Post newspaper.

The violence comes as the US attempts to revive faltering peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a halt to controversial plans for the construction of 24,000 new homes at Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Mr Netanyahu said the plan, announced by his housing minister, had caused unnecessary conflict with the international community at a time when Israel is pressing for a tougher stance on Iran’s nuclear programme.

US loses Unesco voting rights

Posted on

UN cultural agency Unesco has suspended US voting rights after Washington skipped a deadline for paying its dues. The US stopped its contributions, which make up about a fifth of the agency’s funding, when Unesco gave the Palestinians membership in 2011.

Israel, which halted its dues at the same time, has also had its Unesco voting rights suspended. The US and Israel said admitting the Palestinians was a misguided attempt to bypass the Middle East peace process.

The event affects the entire organization of Unesco and all of it’s members since without the sufficient money, no larger programs can be set in action. Unesco’s loss of $80m a year in US funding has forced it to pare back American-led initiatives, including Holocaust education and a project to restore water facilities in Iraq.
