Two men threaten to blow up Boeing 777

Posted on Updated on

Two men threatened to kill passengers and blow up a Boeing 777 at 30,000 feet, a court has heard.

The plane made an emergency landing at Stansted Airport in Essex and fighter jets were scrambled, Chelsmford Crown Court was told.

Tayyab Subhani, 30, of Townley Street, and Mohammed Safdar, 42, of Hallam Crescent, Nelson, Lancashire, deny endangering the safety of an aircraft. The court heard neither was a “terrorist” or “extremist”.

Prosecutor Brian O’Neill QC told jurors that neither man was capable of carrying out the threats but the claim was made deliberately and the pilot had no option but to take it seriously.

Trial for the assassination of Yemen’s president opened

Posted on

A trial has begun in Yemen of nine suspected al-Qaeda members accused of plotting to assassinate President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Prosecutors say six of the group, including the main suspect who is still at large, planted a bomb on a road used by Mr Hadi. Court documents said the group had planted an explosive device on the Siteen road in the capital, Sanaa, to detonate as President Hadi’s motorcade drove to the Presidential Palace. It was not clear when the alleged attempt took place.

In September a Yemeni court convicted three militants on similar charges.

Yemen is struggling to control an al-Qaeda insurgency, general lawlessness and divisions within the army.

On Sunday, nine defendants appeared at a state security court but one was released for lack of evidence. Another, who remains at large, will be tried in absentia.

Presiding Judge Hilal Mahfal set the next hearing for 24 November.

Correspondents say President Hadi has been the target of several attempted attacks.

He was elected in February 2012 after his predecessor, Ali Abdullah Saleh, stepped down as part of a US-backed power transfer deal that ended months of popular protests.

Palestinian shot dead at border

Posted on

Israeli troops have shot dead a Palestinian who tried to stab one of them in the West Bank.

A man brandishing a knife was killed by Border Police officers after he ignored their calls to stop at a checkpoint near Jerusalem. He was the second Palestinian to be killed in the West Bank in two days.

But the dead man’s father insisted that he had simply been attempting to get out of his car after being stopped.

On Thursday, a man was shot by Israeli troops after firing an “improvised weapon” – thought to be a firework or a flare gun – at a checkpoint near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, Israeli police said. The dead man was identified as Bashar Habanin, a 29-year-old from the village of Mirka, near Jenin.
