DR Congo’s M23 chief “surrenders”

Posted on Updated on

The commander of the M23 rebel group in Congo, Sultani Makenga, surrendered in Uganda on November 7th, 2013. Uganda has not made a decision yey wether to hand Makenga to DR Congo or not. Earlier this week the M23 said it was ending its insurgency, hours after the DR Congo government claimed victory. This act settles the defeat of the M23.

Who is the M 23? The M23 is a group of rebels made up of fighters who deserted from the Congolese army in April 2012. They have been fighting since because “the government has not lived up to it’s promises made in 2009”
